Perez-Reverte, *The Flanders Panel*. Interesting and complex female lead (by my benighted male standards), especially fun read for anyone into Renaissance art, doubly so if they’re also a chess player.

    2. “The Thursday Murder Club” series by Richard Osman. Not all of the club are women but >!Elizabeth tends to run things!<.

“The Silence of the Lambs” by Thomas Harris. It’s the second in a series and the first has a male detective, but it can be read as a standalone without any loss of understanding. (That said, I highly recommend reading “Red Dragon”).

“The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” by Alexander McCall Smith.

      If you want female authors:

I’m assuming Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple goes without saying.

Kerry Greenwood’s Phryne Fisher series (takes place in 1920s).

Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series is very popular, as is Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Millhone series.
