My boyfriend has a relatively newfound but solid hobby—reading. However, he’s always been reading non-fiction (self-help, biographies, books on certain subjects he’s interested in at the moment). I, on the other hand, am the opposite, and have always read fiction. He’s curious to see what the ‘other side’ is like, but he doesn’t know where to start—he feels like no fiction book calls out to him or feels ‘productive’ enough to read.
So, do you have any suggestions for a first-time fiction reader?
Additionally, if it helps, his current favorite books are Atomic Habits, Rich Dad Poor Dad, Deep Work, The Revenge of Analogue, Man’s Search for Meaning. In movies/series, he especially enjoys the trope where the male main character starts out weak but through sheer willpower, determination and by having a goal, he exercises/practices so much that he gets stronger/better and can reach his goal (e.g. Naruto, Django Unchained).

*red rising* by pierce brown. i will recommend this book forever to anyone who wants to get into fiction, especially men
Maybe Robert Harris’s Cicero trilogy? It is very close to the historic facts of Cicero’s life and the end of the Roman republic, so definitely has this in common with nonfiction. Cicero was also definitely an underdog who reached the republic’s highest office through talent, determination and hard work. Also, the end of the Roman republic does have similarities to modern politics, so might be interesting for this reason alone.
