I’m a huge fan of stories where the female protagonist is at the center, but I’m tired of love stories being the main plotline. Don’t get me wrong, love can be great, but I’m craving stories where the focus is on personal growth, adventure, or just the complexities of life. Would love to hear your picks!

me too. would love read that
The Apothecary Diaries has a romantic subplot
The Scarlet throne has no romance.
i think one story i remember is ‘Girls’ by Mrinal Pande. i had it as a chapter in Treasure Trove of Short Stories (eighth grade)
Enter Ghost by Isabella Hammad- it’s about a Palestinian woman visiting Haifa after many years. She makes references to a past relationship, but very briefly and the focus is on her reconnection with her ethnicity, her estranged relationship with her sister and the political situation. I highly recommend it, I got goosebumps towards the end.
This may not work but in The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon the protagonist is a middle aged midwife in the 1700s and she’s already married with kids. She and her husband are great but the story is not about their romance so much as it is a mystery.
Life After Life by Kate Atkinson. The main character goes through her life multiple times. There are some relationships along the way but romantic love is not the focus. More on her journey and growth as a person.
Following for more recs!
