    Hi all,

I’m about halfway through this book, and it seems like Willis wrote it purely to frustrate the reader so far.

I came into this really excited for an adventure to medieval Europe…but halfway in, and so far really nothing has happened. The “conflicts” (Kivrin doesn’t know where the pickup drop is, Dunworthy can’t get someone to get a fix on the drop, there’s a mysterious illness in the present) keep teasing some sort of answer before the rug gets pulled, and the guy with the answers falls asleep again, or they have to go somewhere else on a ultimately fruitless task. It’s been 350 pages of “this character is confused. Maybe this event will provide clarity. Nope, let’s try again”. I want something to happen! I want some answers, and I want to see more of 1300s Europe. So far she’s basically been cooped up in one room.

Phfew. Ok rant over. I know it sounds like I hate this book. The issue is – I don’t! I like the characters. I like Willis’ writing. It’s a very interesting premise. I want to love it! It’s just not going anywhere!

Does the 2nd half improve? Is the rest of the series this plodding?

    Thanks in advance!
