‘The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society’ by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows

It is an epistolary novel. Set on the island of Guernsey, off the coast of Britain. It was occupied by Germany during WWII. The novel takes place after the war and deals with the psychological repercussions of it.

We follow Juliet Ashton, a Londoner who is struggling with writer’s block. She recieves a letter from the island of Guernsey asking for book recommendations. She learns about The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and starts a correspondence with the islanders.

The novel is very witty and funny with so much heart and depth. You will laugh and cry in equal measure. It contains the depths of human suffering and the heights of happiness.

The format makes it quick and easy to read. The novel has a distinctly quirky, English sensibility to it. Some of the slang is a bit dated but I think that adds to its realism and charm.

I read the novel when quarantine regulations were being lifted. I was surprised at how much I could relate to the characters’ love of new freedom and their discomfort at not knowing how to use it.

Please, please, please read this book! If you’re a person who has existed on Earth for at least a few years, you will adore this book.

      Edit: Spelling.
