My favorite would be "Before We Were Immigrants; So Long Yugoslavia" and "Embers." Both offer a good rumination on someone's life and a great narration. Some of those where delivery didn't match the expectation: Letters from Prague by Sue Gee and Salman the Solitary by Yasar Kemal. Still, my favorite genre is unknown books with not much attention.

it is DEFINITELY highly recommended in certain spaces i’m sure, but i read child of god by cormac mccarthy randomly one day, no influence, absolutely wrecked me

{{The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender}} if you’re into magical realism and heartbreak. Can’t even remember how I came across that one, but I’ve never seen it mentioned here (other than my own doing).

    3. Good Omens. Had no idea what it was or who the writers were, just found it in the university library and thought the cover (plain worn black hardcover with gilt text on the spine) seemed promising.

I used to find 90% of my reading material like that, and it paid off fairly often.

I recommend it all the time on here, but I found a battered copy of *The Lies of Locke Lamora* in a used bookshop, and the intrigue of the title and the beautiful cover (purple and silver) initially attracted me, and it was just one of those books that I kept coming back to look at when I was wandering the shop. I told myself that I would buy it if it was there on another visit, it was, and the rest is history. It’s one of my favorites.

I enjoyed One Thousand White Women. I think it is the first in a series but I haven’t read the others.
