BUT, and this is very important, I want something where the MC isn't filled with self-loathing. I know it's tricky, because this is a beloved character arc (the MC goes from feeling unlovable to feeling loved), but I enjoy romance to escape, and reminding me of all the reasons that people tend to hate themselves is a huge downer for me.
It can be contemporary, historical, fantasy, mystery, YA or adult, spice or no spice, any genders. As long as it is FUNNY!
Thank you in advance!

Can I suggest asking this in r/romancebooks? They always have great suggestions!
I really like the light and amusing Black Sheep by Georgette Heyer. Set in Regency England, it ‘s about a slowburn romance between a ‘mature woman’ [she’s 28!] and a middle-aged, reformed rake; with a subplot of a cunning con-man trying to seduce the MC’s young niece.
It’s fun, witty, feel-good; the way that the con-man gets his comeuppance [no spoiler this really] is very good; and the heroine is a confident woman who doesn’t hate herself.
I read and re-read this book every couple of years and it never gets old!
I enjoyed Not just a moment by Ivy Wilson
Fairy Godmothers Inc by Saranna Dewylde.
Happy Medium by Sarah Adler.
The Off-Limits Rule by Sarah Adams.
Partners in Crime by Alisha Rai.
To Have and to Heist by Sara Desai.
The Magnolia Chronicles by Kate Canterbary. (And the rest of the Santillian Triplets trilogy.)
The *Confessions of a Shopaholic* series by Sophie Kinsella. Romance is more secondary, but still part of the plot.
