Creepy camp in the woods. There’s creepy aspect of it is hidden in plain sight. There’s a deeper meaning to this I can’t reveal without giving away the story. It’s revealed once the protagonist’s perception of the world she thought she knew is shattered, revealing the true threat

The Upright Man, Michael Marshall Smith. Technically it’s a sequel, but I haven’t read The Straw Men and I did okay. Gory and unsettling.
