An acquaintance learned I like reading, and he said I should really read Shogun, by James Clavell, and it's one of his favorite books. I said yeah I'll start it once I finish my current book. I look up Shogun and it's almost 1,200 pages long…

Guess what I'm doing for probably the next month? Haha

    1. I always have a hard time when someone recommends a full series. It’s such a commitment to get started.

    2. yes and unfortunately for me it was one of my professors who was mentoring me so you know what I ended up doing as well.
it was finnegans wake by james joyce and although it’s not 1,000 pages if you ever pick it up and see it’s a stream on consciousness in like 700 pages… it’ll feel like more 😭

    3. E-readers help- that way you aren’t reading 1,000 pages, just one page, then another, then another

    4. Shogun is a fun novel. I’ll give a long book a read if the prose feels like it has momentum. Another long read for me that went well was Mailer’s The Executioner’s Song.

    5. Epic Fantasy books can tend to be around that length and are on my recommended reading list. For example, the first book in the Stormlight Archives series by Brandon Sanderson (Way of Kings) is around 1000 pages.

The Power Broker was recommended to me for many years by a lot of folks and I’m so damn glad I read it.

My friend wanted to buddy read Stephen King’s IT and I said yes without knowing anything about the book. It wasn’t until I picked up the book from the library that I realized how long it actually was. I ended up switching to the ebook so I could read more ergonomically.

It was a lot of fun getting to talk to my friend as we both read through it, so it was definitely worth it! I would not have read it otherwise

    8. You asked for a suggestion and they gave you one. It does not mean you have to read it if you think 1000+ pages is too many or if the book does not interest you.

Yes, I have been recommended many books with lots of pages. I have read some and not others.

Stephen King has a couple: ‘IT’, ‘The Stand’, and ‘Under the Dome’.

    10. Shogun is a classic and a great read. I’d also recommend all of Haruki Murakami’s books, like 1Q84 and they are quite long. Somehow when you have a book that takes you on a wonderful journey down the rabbit hole and you love the characters and story… you want the book to be even longer.

I started reading Throne of Glass knowing its a 7 book series but unknowing the last book is 1000 pages long – still one of my favourite series though

The My Brilliant Friend series was worth every page. I wish there had been 1,000 more! Haha. Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry and A Little Life by Hanya Yanigihara are not quite as long, but both large undertakings that I found worth it. Actually starting East of Eden in a little bit, which I’m hoping will have the same payoff!

Yes I have. I just recommended one today – Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell.

Also, recommending series is like recommending a 1000+ pages book. At least for the series that don’t work as stand alones.

Longer books are easier to get out of because whenever they ask you can just say “I really want to read it but I can’t commit to 1200 pages right now. I’ve added it to my list!”
