Maybe not exactly what youāre looking for, but Lonely Castle in the Mirror is a great book – kid characters and interesting fantasy elements!
Howl’s Moving Castle is a book by Diana Wynne Jones and it’s fantastic. She also wrote Chrestomanci and Dogsbody which have Ghibli vibes to meĀ
I’d also recommend the book Heidi which has a cozy pastoral setting and was actually adapted into an anime which Miyazaki worked on.Ā
A Psalm for the Wild Built by Becky Chambers (more like Castle in the Sky)
Houses with a Story by Seiji Yoshida
The Teller of Small Fortunes by Julie Leong
The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst
Also, based on Chinese mythology (not Japanese or South Korean), but there were moments in Song of the Six Realms by Judy I. Lin when sheās marveling at the celestial characters that made me think of a moment in Spirited Away
Emily Of New Moon by LM Montgomery reminds me of one of the no-magic Ghibli films, like Whisper of the Heart.
Journal of a traveling cat
Ghibli made a movie based on the Earthsea universe. I havenāt seen the movie, but I recently read the first novel in the franchise called A Wizard of Earthsea, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I actually had the feeling while reading that the source could make for a great anime adaptation.
Rose Daughter by Robin McKinley definitely deserves to be a Ghibli movie. It’s a somewhat abstract adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, with a lot of vivid imagery that would look amazing in Ghibli’s vivid colors.
