Yk how in a lot of stories you have the two main characters that live in completely different worlds and are pretty much on opposite sides, but they meet each other and overcome the challenges that their difference in status/wealth/faction/race etc brings?
Well. I want a book where 2 characters meet each other, realise they live in 2 different worlds, try to overcome that, but FAIL.
I want a royal that falls in love with a street rat, but their romance fails because of their difference in status.
I want a character from a privileged group try to befriend a character from the persecuted group, but they have a fallout because the discrimination from the privileged group gets too much for the persecuted character.
I want the child of the hero and the child of the villain to try to bridge the gap between their two sides, but despite both of their best efforts, they simply can’t see eye to eye.
I want a relationship that tries so hard to work, to succeed, but the pure UNFAIRNESS of and between their situations makes it impossible.

Can’t quite remember the ending(!) but try All My Friends Are Superheroes by Andrew Kaufman.
