I’m looking for stories that focus on emotionally intense or psychologically complex characters something that feels raw, real, and sticks with you after reading. I really like books that explore isolation, inner conflict, or uncomfortable situations in a grounded way.
In manga, I love Inio Asano’s work (Oyasumi Punpun, A Girl on the Shore, Solanin) and Shuzo Oshimi’s Aku no Hana. I’m drawn to that mix of emotional weight, quiet tension, and uncomfortable honesty.
For novels, Heaven by Mieko Kawakami is probably my favorite book. I also really liked No Longer Human, Frog by Mo Yan, perks of being a wallflower, and The Catcher in the Rye. Convenience Store Woman was interesting but didn’t quite hit the emotional depth I’m looking for.
I also appreciate more twisted or unsettling stories like Lolita, Diary of an Oxygen Thief, and virgin suicides.
