I know I'm probably a little morbid, but I'm really looking for some to sink my teeth into. Not extremely partial to any particular setting, I'll take WW1, WW2, Napoleonic Wars, Yugoslav Wars, pretty much anything. From the point of view of a civilian, a soldier, just about anyone else too.

I've generally got a pretty strong stomach for gory or dark content. What I'm really looking for is good research and compelling historical details. Honestly, I'd take narrative nonfiction too, but not really looking for something that is just dry facts.

Books in this genre I've really enjoyed lately include City of Thieves by David Benioff and Between Before and After by Edita Mujkic.

Set during Kamehameha’s time. A war novel in the late 1790s Hawaii. Got gory fights in that.

    2. * *Secret Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines with the Elite Warriors of SOG* by John L. Plaster. This one’s pretty exciting. Sneaking behind enemy lines to get intel on and sabotage enemy camps while being vastly outnumbered.

      * *With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa* by Eugene B. Sledge. Lots of misery in trench warfare against the Japanese.

      * *Goodbye to All That* by Robert Graves. Lots of misery in WWI trench warfare.
