Okay, I am in a bit of a conundrum. I have been trying out several books lately and I just can’t figure out what kind of books to stick to.
I like novels with strong character development that portray human nature realistically in a setting that teaches me a little about the history or current state of a country but is at the same time uplifting and hopeful.
I haven’t been able to find a book like that so far. Uplifting and hopeful books that I’ve picked up have turned out to be too sappy, with two-dimensional characters that just weren’t believable and left me feeling frustrated as a result.
On the other hand, when I pick up books with a realistic setting and believable characters, then most of the time, there are disturbing scenes of violence, persecution or assault, which give me panic attacks.
I figured I would seek some advice and recommendations on here as there must be other readers who, like me, enjoy realistic books with strong character development while at the same time being hopeful and not triggering and believable.
Do such books exist? I am open to anything from classics (though I didn’t enjoy Jane Austen either) to contemporary. Happy to read international novels and international classics as well.
Thanks a lot. ❤️

The Elegance of the Hedgehog – Muriel Barbery
The Human Comedy by Saroyan
Can you give examples of some books you liked? I can definitely give some suggestions with a little guidance.
Not sure if this is what you’re looking for but I loved The Dutch House by Ann Patchett for the reasons you described. It’s a book about the relationship of a brother and sister as they go through life. It has some moments of sadness but didn’t feel like it was trying to make me cry. It felt authentic and takes you inside their family so you get to know the characters. The ending felt so satisfying, such a lovely read. Hope this helps!
