I recently read The Years by Annie Ernaux and was completely captivated by her style. The way she blends personal memory with collective history, all written in this spare, almost detached yet deeply evocative voice—it was unlike anything I’ve ever read.
I’m looking for more books that capture that same feeling of:
Autobiography or memoir with a universal, almost sociological perspective
Poetic, fragmentary or non-linear structure
Themes like memory, time, aging, and cultural shifts
Writing that’s emotionally resonant but restrained (not overly sentimental)
Other books I read in the past that gave me a similar feeling:
Autobiography of Red by Anne Carson
Things I Don’t Want to Know by Deborah Levy
Would love any suggestions!!
