I am looking for suggestions for novels set in a non western culture, authored by someone native to that culture, that center that culture and place—in other words are not split between a western culture and that place, nor viewed through the eyes of a traveler or outsider. Can be about anything, I just want to see normal from a perspective outside of my own. I recognize that colonialism makes this hard in many places, but if you have recommendations that take place in areas with a strong colonial presence then I’d be looking for books from those places that center indigenous stories and perspectives. Bonus points for recommendations that aren’t too depressing. Thank you!
In searching around in similar request threads it sounds like The Convenience Store Woman might fit the bill (I haven’t read it yet!), so if you have and it sounds like what I’m looking for and know of any others in a similar vein please share!
