Does anyone have any faves in this odd category? I am looking for inspiration to punch up a manuscript that has some big birds and big fish teaming up with humans to fight bad guys, trying to get a handle on how they percieve us. Thanks!

A) are you looking for animals that speak and B) do the animals have human-like cognition? I think you’re gonna get a lot of wildly different suggestions depending on how you answer those.
Lots of great children’s/youth books across the spectrum. I’ve always loved Narnia (but particularly the Horse and his Boy) toward this prompt. I like that the Bree is still very horse-like.. But these are speaking animals. Black Beauty, maybe? Lots of Tamora Pierce but particularly the Wild Magic series. The Bear and the Nightingale I think might fit.
As weird as it sounds, for (mostly) nonspeaking animals that are intelligent but not in a human way, I loved Dinotopia. I think that was a really innovative take.
“Watchers” by Dean Koontz. Book and especially the audiobook performed by Edoardo Ballerini is far better than any of the motion picture adaptations.
