I live in a small town near some of the old historic Route 66 in the high desert and there's a certain mystique and eerie feeling to this kind of place that I've only ever seen captured in songs (and somewhat in "Shutter" by Ramona Emerson) and I have trouble capturing in words as is because I suppose it's just "normal" to me. I would like some recommendations that really use that landscape and that kind of town in the horror and/or mystery and thriller genre so I can get a thrill close to home and also get inspiration on how to better capture the setting through text.

“Where When It Rains,” a recent fave of mine, is set in Phoenix, Arizona and the surrounding area. It’s an excellent book, and you’ll feel like you’re there.

It sounds like your ready to write about it to me. “Normal” is a good thing, it’s in your bones. Use your own voice and tell your tale like you would to a buddy sitting next to you at a bar.
