I can’t believe I hadn’t ever discovered David Mitchell before this. I was creating some reading lists for this Halloween (I’m a public librarian), and I wanted to do some very specific themes, one of which was unsettling or odd houses. I stumbled upon Slade House and devoured it, only to discover that it was part of a larger body of work.
Picked up The Bone Clocks immediately after. Listened to that through my commute and the ending just left me sobbing. I felt like I was right there with Holly having my heart wrung out.
I can’t get over how talented the author is. He made the kind of characters that I normally despise actually… likable? I didn’t expect to, but I actually enjoyed the story about Hershey Crispin a ton. I found it surprisingly touching at parts. The entire book was really just filled with small, touching moments.
Also…. Having some of the most heartbreaking events happen in between the time skips was quite shocking. I didn’t like the decision to do that at first, but now, after thinking on it, it feels right. Fitting with the tone of the book overall.
David Mitchell fans, are ALL of his novels connected? Do you have a favorite scene from this novel? Would you recommend any specific reading order?
