I absolutely love Death Comes for the Archbishop by Willa Cather. It’s a perfect read (I’ve had two this year so far and that is very rare for me!).

In reading a letter included by her to the editors of The Commonweal on why she wrote it, I was struck by her explaining that she was happy from start to finishing while writing the story.

Her enjoyment is evident in each chapter and each page. I would compare the experience of reading this book to either having wonderful food that tastes great and doesn’t leave you feeling bad or to lovely music that you want to listen to over and over.

I wonder, is it just her writing or her joy in the telling? I think it’s both but truly feel her happiness in her subject spilled into her writing and colored it even more beautifully.

And now, I’m curious…Does anyone know of authors who said they loved writing a particular book?
