I rewatched Lukas Dhont's film Close (2022) recently and realized I couldn't think of a book that dealt with the theme of boys' friendships in a similar way. I actually couldn't think of many novels thematically centered around young, intense male friendship; the two that spring to mind are A Separate Peace and A Prayer for Owen Meany, but both focus on very conventional male friendships. The novels that do chronicle more intense and intimate young male friendships tend to turn them romantic/sexual partway through. Can anyone here think of any novels portraying relationships that resemble the relationship between the main characters in Close? If there are none, it seems like kind of a lacuna.
