So I bought my mom an eReader for her birthday and want to load it up with books she will like. She's a healthy reader, but the only thing she likes more than reading is watching crime TV shows on BritBox. I'm hoping to marry the two interests and find some good reads that have the same vibe as a british murder mystery TV show.

Her ideal criteria for a show are that it's set in the U.K. or Ireland, is a murder mystery, and stars an older female protagonist. (She's also been big into a New Zealand-set series lately, so there's some wiggle room on geographic location—it's really about the vibe.) There are lots of TV shows fitting those criteria, but now I'm hoping I can find some books that do!

    Thanks in advance!!

    1. The Mrs Malory series by Hazel Holt might be perfect for her. It’s very enjoyable, set in England, with a middle-aged woman as the main character. Highly recommended!

The Marlow Murder Club – it’s written by the creator of Death in Paradise and is exactly this.

Vera Stanhope series by Ann Cleeves are solid mysteries with a middle aged protagonist (most have been dramatized). Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman (4 books so far), older women and men. And we mustn’t forget Miss Jane Marple!

You’re probably gonna get a lot of recs for Richard Osman’s books. Particularly The Thursday Murder Club.

I think she may like Zara Keane’s Movie Club Mysteries. The protagonist isn’t really *older* but they’re good mysteries set on a small Irish island written by an Irish author.

Similarly, I don’t remember the age of the protagonist but she would probably appreciate How to Solve Your Own Murder by Kristen Perrin.

Killers of a Certain age is about 4 retired female assassins who realize someone is trying to kill them. Very fun read.

The protagonist is not that old, but the Corrina Chapman mysteries are delightful. About a quirky Australian baker and her eccentric neighbors.
