That’s up for debate, personally I’d say the two most important books are The Epic of Gilgamesh, and Journey to The West. Gilgamesh is important since it’s literally the first story that was ever written, while Journey has had a greater influence on fiction than every other classical story combined (largely by influencing stories that came to influence entire genres to the point that every work of modern fiction can trace it’s influences back to Journey to The West)

      Don’t Quixote by Cervantes.

      War and Peace by Tolstoy.

      Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky.

      Ulysses by James Joyce.

      Anna Karenina by Tolstoy.

      Pride and Prejudice by Austen.

Any major novel written by Charles Dickens.

      Moby Dick by Herman Melville.

The following aren’t novels, but I would recommend them anyway as they are essential reads:

      The epic of Gilgamesh.

The Iliad & The Odyssey by Homer.

      The Mahabharata.

      Journey to the west.

      The Divine Comedy.

      The canterbury tales by Chaucer.

      The faerie Queene by Spencer.

      Paradise Lost by John Milton.
