Once had a bookshop keeper describe a book to me where a man asks for directions, and the plot of the novel keeps digressing because the direction teller keeps getting sidetracked with inconsequential backstories and details. Been a few years since I had the discussion but it came beacuse he and I were talking about Douglas Adams Bureaucracy.

It’s not quite at the same level as what you’re describing, but one of my favourite parts of Vonnegut’s **Breakfast of Champions** is all the little tangents he keep going off on.
