I wanna read something that is dark in tone, but from an era before the heavy influence of the internet’s edginess.
It’s easy for somebody to look up a bunch of screwed up topics & write a book like Playground, as a way to shock people.
And I feel like fiction before that had a distinct style of more thought put in from the author & their personal experiences with life.
Also with the fact a lot of older stories go into significantly uncomfortable themes, be it by the Bible’s portrayal of abuse & torture, Macbeth being a bloody tragedy, or The Midnight Meat Train being from a time of frustration & disillusionment in the U.S. economy, written by a homosexual Horror writer (Clive Barker) in a time when both had negative connotations in the American zeitgeist.
