    1. The Dream Of Poliphilus (1499) by Francesco Colonna [based more on Greek/Roman mythology than on Christian religion, but of course written by a Christian]

Gargantua & Pantagruel (1532-64) by François Rabelais [very fantastical, grotesque and bawdy; not very religious or allegorical but definitely has a deeper satirical layer]

Lucifer (1654) by Joost van den Vondel [theatre play about the same topic as Paradise Lost, but a few years older and of course much shorter since it’s a play]

Best Jewish literature book I’ve ever read and one of my top 10 books. That is Tevya the dairy man by Shalem Aleichem. Far better known for its incarnation as the play fiddler on the roof, the book is a beautiful collection of short stories that really are moving emotionally.
