I’m pretty new to the fantasy genre (I usually read Thriller/Suspense, but I want to try something new) — I haven’t read much (or really any) fantasy before, but I’m ready to dive in. That said, I want something captivating.
A few things I’m looking for:
- Something off the beaten path — no Game of Thrones, Sarah J. Maas, or Sanderson please. I want something I haven’t seen hyped all over BookTok or on every “Top 10 Fantasy” list (No offense!!)
- Romantasy is totally okay — I don’t mind romance at all, as long as it doesn’t become the whole plot. I’d rather it supports the world/story than overtake it.
- I’d love a strong sense of atmosphere — whether that’s lush and cozy, eerie and weird, or richly political.
- Queer representation, unique worldbuilding, or genre-bending elements are all welcome.
What hidden gems or underrated favorites would you recommend?
