    My daughter is 6 and we are finishing up building a house this summer. She likes to hang out and play as I work and we listen to books together, only problem is, I'm running out of series to listen to together. We've done all of Redwall, Little House on the Prairie, Boxcar Children, every American Girl book available on Libby, Cam Jansen, Encyclopedia Brown, Chronicles of Narnia, James Herriot, Geronimo Stilton…. I think we could potentially do the first Harry Potter book or maybe the Hobbit, but the later ones are probably too mature for her to understand at this point, and I'd rather have her enjoy them when the time is right. She loves Redwall especially. Any jumping off points would be great!

      Redwall by Brian Jacques, the first couple books have a full cast audio books and the others (I think) have the author doing all the voices.

    2. The whipping Boy is quite good. My 4th graders read it but she sounds quite capable if she is listening to those others.

      Fantastic Mr Fox

      My dad read To Kill a Mockingbird to me when I was for or five and we read it every fall after that for about five or six years.

      Willy Wonka

      Danny, Champion of the World

      Wicked wicked ladies in the haunted house (also called the wicked pigeons ladies in the garden)

      The little princess

      All of the wizard of Oz books

    3. The Hobbit is definitely not too much for her unless she just doesn’t like it. She is the perfect age for the hobbit!

      I recommend any of Roald Dahl’s books but especially ‘Matilda’. You’re daughter is the same age as Matilda and might really relate to her!

    5. If she seems to like fantasy sci Fi, look up the and books , I think it was Heinlein did for boy scouts back in the early part 20th. My dad read those to me. Have Space Suit Will Travel may be one. I loves it when I was her age.

    7. Look into Newberry Books. These are the best children’s books of every year.

      Not everyone is right for a 6 year old but there are som good ones.

      Skellig by David Almond; it’s a wonderful book both for children and adults and it exists as an audiobook

    9. – Penderwicks series by Jeanne Birdsall;
      – Mrs Frisby & the Rats of NIMH (standalone, not a series, but features a lovely mouse family);
      – Arabel & Mortimer series by Joan Aiken;
      – Chrestomanci series by Diana Wynne Jones (can be read in any order);
      – Kingdoms & Empires series by Jaclyn Moriarty;
      – The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander;
      – Paddington books by Michael Bond;
      – Carbonel trilogy by Barbara Sleigh;
      – Marguerite Henry’s horse books (Misty of Chincoteague, etc);
      – Roald Dahl’s books, as already mentioned. One of my favourites is “The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me”, though it’s quite short

    10. Inkheart by Cornelia Funke
      The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart
      The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin (not a series but a classic kids mystery it sounds like she’d like)
      The Name of This Book is Secret by Pseudonomous Bosch

    11. *The Hatmakers* by Tamzin Merchant! It has the whimsical, magical and humorous vibe of the early Harry Potter books but the target audience is a bit younger. The audiobooks are lovely!

      I’m very fond of The Edge Chronicles, although I am also very fond of the illustrations.

      Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome is very good! The whole series is.

      The Betsy-Tacy series, especially the early ones when the girls are younger
