I’m finding it hard to articulate this but I’m looking for books which feature characters – preferably antagonists – who have become corrupted and turn into the tyrants of their own unofficial fiefdom. Examples of the kind of thing I mean might be Kurtz from Heart of Darkness (and Apocalypse Now of course) and Craster from GOT. I’m interested in all interpretations of this idea but particularly in cases where characters started off with a generally noble mission (or at least once believed they did).
