I’m hoping to find a non-fiction book about the history of different countries or regions around the world, with a few preferences:
What I'm looking for:
- Regions: Not North America or Western Europe—I’m already pretty familiar with those. I’d also like to skip Southern Europe unless the focus isn't on the Roman Empire. I’m especially interested in Northern, Central, or Eastern Europe, but books set in Africa, Asia, Oceania, or South America are absolutely welcome and encouraged too.
- Topics: Please no WWII-focused books.
- Scope: I prefer broader, sweeping histories over books centered on a single event—though I’m open to lesser-known events if the book is compelling. I’m not especially into military history, but it’s fine if it’s part of a larger narrative.
- Tone/Style: Since I’ll likely be listening to the audiobook, I’d appreciate something engaging and well-written, not overly dense or academic.
I have a special interest in Czechia/Bohemia, so if you know of any great books about that area, I’d really appreciate your recommendations! (Has anyone read The Middle Kingdoms by Martyn Rady?)
To give you a sense of my taste: I loved 1491, so anything with that kind of scope and storytelling would be ideal.
Thanks in advance!
