Our kids are age 2 and 4, about to turn 3 and 5. We got the Fern Hollow books to read to our oldest a few months after he turned 3, and he absolutely loved them. The combination of rich illustrations and cozy adventure vibes were perfect for him. I’m looking for the next step.
We got him the Magic Treehouse books, but he hasn’t warmed to them as much. I think the lack of illustrations (only a few per book rather than an every page or so) and themes that are focused on slightly older children are contributing factors. It seems like we are at a gap as far as reading and listening level. We were so pleased at the explosion in language development that occurred with him shortly after starting the Fern Hollow books.
I’m looking for a series of stories or books that include illustrations (can be less frequent than every page, but would prefer at least one every two pages or so), some adventure and some coziness, and maybe slightly more developed plots than the Fern Hollow books, while keeping the themes to something a 5 year old would appreciate. The idea for these books is for them to be read aloud by an adult. If they have plots and themes that might also appeal to a child who just turned 3, even better, but most important is that they appeal to someone turning 5 (we have lots of good books for 3 year olds).
Thanks for any suggestions!
