I'm in the midst of a postmodern binge and Gravity's Rainbow is next up on my list. I'm not sure if, given how life's been lately (I'm not depressed or anything, only uncertain), I want to read a book which is, to my knowledge, primarily about WWII, the Holocaust and potentially humanity ending weapons.
Could you recommend something that isn't pure escapist fiction or entirely sunshine and rainbows, but also isn't about something similar to the aforementioned topics? If it helps, some of my standout authors are Faulkner, Pynchon and Joseph Heller.
