Hi, does anyone know any books that give off a similar vibe as “white nights” by Dostoevsky or “Madonna in a fur coat” by sabahattin ali? I want something that’s preferably a classic or old but not a requirement. It needs to be philosophic and a good depiction of yearning or unrequited love. Preferably sad in some kind of way.

Classic: Love in the Time of of Cholera

More modern: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay; the Goldfinch; and The Heart’s Invisible Furies.

    2. I’m a huge fan of yearning books, but admittedly, these may not fit your preference for classics since they are very contemporary. But maybe someone else who comes here for yearning books will find what they came for, so this is what I’ve got:

The Girls by Emma Cline (also The Guest by Cline contains a lot of yearning, but I didn’t like it as much personally)

The Book of Goose by Yiyun Li

      Milk Fed by Melissa Broder

      Exhibit by R.O. Kwan

      Both of Miranda July’s novels

If you want the yearning to get really messed up:

      Paradais – Fernanda Melchor

Rejection – Tony Tulathimutte (not all the yearning is directly between people but I found every story to be about people with an insatiable want)
