I’m looking for books with a shocking, heartbreaking, or horrific reveal where the monsters/villains/antagonists turn out to be… not what we expected at all. Specifically, in a way that leads us to question whether the protagonists are even really heroes.
Especially interested in horror, scifi, and fantasy. Open to lots of different interpretations of this! Thanks in advance!

Asking this question defeats the purpose of the plot twist
I feel like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is probably too obvious for this but it really is an amazing book.

I just watched the movie Sicario last night. By the end I felt like my expectations had all been turned inside out. My perceptions and ideas seriously challenged.
