I made it my goal for this year to try out new genres, as I usually go for horror and classics, so I’ve read a few popular romance novels.
I disliked The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood and Book Lovers by Emily Henry as I didn’t feel any true chemistry between the maim characters.
While I have yet to finish it, I liked The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang more, due to the character’s unique traits and the varied storyline, and I overall liked Beach Read by Emily Henry, though I hate how her male characters are a carbon copy of each other.
So l'm here to ask your advice on what other books should a romance newbie like me try out.
Here's a general list of things l'd like to read about or not.
YES:
• "Brainy" main characters, preferably not stereotypical.
• Something light as a summer read
• As a big Taylor Jenkins Reid fan, novels similar to hers.
• Main characters with interesting occupations
P.S. I don't mind spice, just not full on erotica.
NOT REALLY:
• Dark Romance books, Romantasy or YA
• Male character who's personality solely
revolves around being "dark and brooding"
• Character who goes to a small town to "find
themselves"
• Romanticization of abuse, rape, etc.
Obvs I'm new to the romance genre, so, apart from these things, I want to keep my mind open!
