i’m entering into my senior year of college and im trying to spend the summer preparing for my undergrad capstone in english lit, a brief (20-30 page) pseudo-“thesis” on a topic of our choosing. going into the summer, we’re expected to have a rough idea of the literary period or tradition we want to study (i chose modernism) and a theoretical approach we want to take (i chose psychoanalytic theory, namely lacanian psychoanalytic theory). in preparing for our capstone, we’re also (obviously) supposed to read several books from our chosen period, which i have been trying to do. i’ve read woolf, faulkner and joyce’s most popular novels (sans finnegan’s wake obviously lol) but im not sure where to go from here – i know kafka, proust, james and lawrence are often considered “early modernists”- should i try reading some of their work? are there more popular modernist authors that i am missing? are there modernist authors outside of the anglosphere that i should read? any book recs (or theory recs on modernism and psychoanalysis) would be greatly appreciated.
