I love it when a book gives me a strong sense of time and place, and it really feels like I know the world alongside the characters living in it. I’m looking for books where you can tell the author did their research into the location and time period; full of details about the food, the clothing, the architecture, the furniture, the slang, the transportation, just any of the details of day-to-day life.

Mercedes Lackey’s Elemental Masters series is a good example of what I’m looking for. She goes into detail about what people are wearing, what they eat, how they make their living, etc. I don’t just want the general vibes and aesthetic of the place and time period; I want the whole package.

I’m mostly interested in fantasy, to be honest, but I’ll read plain fiction if it really fits the bill. I’d especially like some good weird west recommendations.

    • No World War I or II fiction, please. I’m good on that.
    • I will happily read romances, but they have to commit to the setting, not just present me with Bridgerton flavored set dressing.
    • You don’t need to recommend Outlander. Everyone and my mother has already recommended Outlander to me.
    • Yes, I’ve read Les Mis, I’m not looking for quite that level of detail on Paris’ sewer system.
