Just finished Misery by Stephen King and the narrator has plenty of opportunities to describe the different ways things can hurt.

Through all the books I’ve read, one of the best descriptions of physical pain (and powering through it) is in Dog Soldiers by Robert Stone. The book is about a drug deal gone bad and is set against the backdrop of the Vietnam war. The scene I’m remembering occurs near the end of/ climax of the book.
