two of my favorite books from the past year were throwback by maurene goo and this time tomorrow by emma straub; both feature a protagonist with a complicated relationship with their parents but after meeting / re-meeting the younger versions, they come to understand why their parents are the way they are. I just really want a book to tug at my heartstrings, don’t mind some romance in the background but I don’t want a bait and switch a la about time with rachel mcadams.

If you ever felt like you wish there had been someone there who would have helped you when the world just seemed like a really scary place, this book is the only one I can remember where I had to take crying breaks – several of them – but it was all happy tears. “A Close and Common Orbit”, Becky Chambers.
Right Back at You.. it’s a juvenile fiction book but good.
The Moon Represents My Heart by Pim Wangtechat
Throwback by Maurene Goo
The Devil’s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen (actually she goes thru the Holocaust with her great aunts, but still, a worthy read)
