    1. Maybe the greatest literary autobiographical novel of all time. Would recommend to anyone who didn’t possess a sole focus devoted to plot and action, and to everyone who has any positive experience at all with Joyce as a writer. Doubly if that experience was academic.

If it speaks to you, read a little Nabokov, and then move to *Speak, Memory.* There aren’t too many writers who can hold a literary candle to Joyce, but he and Nabokov can perform on the same ticket.

    2. I’d be hesitant to recommend that book unless you have some experience with Dante’s Divine comedy. I read it as a teen and I have to say I don’t think I registered a lot. It would probably help to have a companion. Joyce Annotated: Notes for ‘Dubliners’ and ‘A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man’ from Amazon looks good.
