Seeking book recommendations: Ideally about or centered in New York, even better Brooklyn in the 1940″s/30s. Also seeking success stories about people of color et al. Nothing lude please. For my 88 year old mom, stuck in the bed, grew up in the Bronx during the 30s and 40s. She was a registered nurse, made her way to CA through the Navy and practiced for 40 years, ending her career in San Francisco.
