I recently tried to read crime fiction books and I found out that most of them has pretty weak description and variety of places. Featureless homes and workplaces of protagonists, witnesses and suspects occupy ~70+ % of a book. What I would like to see is something like an atmospheric descriptive travel book of a particular area (some city or urban area) disguised under the cover of a detective story. I'm mostly interested in American geography, particularly the coastal regions of the US.
Another aspect, which I'm interested in, is the wider geography of an investigation, like in the season 1 of "True Detective", where they traveled over the whole Louisiana state. A kaleidoscope of small towns, urban outskirts, motels, diners, desolate roads, etc. There is something close to it in the Jack Reacher books. Any crime fiction books/series with such or similar features?
