I keep seeing posts asking for non-fiction recommendations and I promise you I've been told by many I have "good taste" and my comments often go unnoticed so I gathered my favorites in one post:
- A Gentleman and a Thief: The Daring Jewel Heists of a Jazz Age Rogue by Dean Jobb. Think of it as The Great Gatsby meets Ocean's Eleven, 100+ years ago. A real page-turner, if you're in a reading slump I promise this will bring you out. The introduction alone mentions liquid nitroglycerin used for safe-cracking…a very exciting book that makes you root for the criminal. One of my favorite books of all time, and I've read hundreds.
- Dead Wake by Erik Larson. Each chapter switches back and forth between the Lusitania and the U-boat that was stalking it. He's one of my favorite authors ever. He is so descriptive you'll feel like you're on the ship deck watching the torpedo. He sparked my interest in U-boats and he's a pro at not making you feel like you're reading history, he makes it feel like a novel.
- Phanton Fleet: The Hunt for the Nazi Submarine U-505 and WWII's Most Daring Heist. Think of it similar to Dead Wake, a cat and mouse game of trying to capture the war's most prized enemy U-boat.
- The Escape Artists: A Band of Daredevil Pilots and the Greatest Prison Break of the Great War. It's set in WWI, with allied POWs trying to escape their German POW camps. Their tactics were so clever and interesting and you're really rooting for them to succeed. Their schemes inspired the movie The Great Escape, although that's set in WWII. Who knew milk could be used as invisible ink? 😏
- When Evil Came to Good Hart by Mardi Link. A family is unalived in their vacation cabin on The Great Lakes. It's mysterious and sometimes I like books that display the circumstances and it's up to the reader to determine what the conclusion is.
- Eden Undone: A True Story of S*x, M*rder, and Utopia and the Dawn of WWII by Abbott Kahler. A group of people decides to settle on the Galapagos Islands and leave traditional society behind. The entire book is filled with suspense – very Alfred Hitchcock meets Agatha Christie. It's a unique story and a real-page turner.
