Hiiii!! My younger sister-in-law is entering high school this year. Her parents aren’t the type to really enforce education in any type of way, so my fiancé and I figured we might as well try to get her the best education we can. The primary issue is that she really can’t read, she can read basic words, of course, but she struggles horribly with reading and I really don’t want this to impact her life going forward, especially since she wants to go to college. What are books that you would suggest for a high schooler who can’t read very well?? She really likes romance, obviously nothing that inappropriate, but also something that wouldn’t make her feel embarrassed to read it. What would you suggest??

I would suggest doing an amazon (or similar) search for “hi-lo books for adults” this means “High Intelect, Low Vocabulary” and they are designed for people with intellectual disabilities, but it might be the push she gets. I can also suggest maybe doing some books that have audiobook companions so she can read along, kinda? this is would be a bit more advance, but it could help with pronunciation.
I’m in Canada, but maybe you can order [Hi-Lo](https://www.orcabook.com/Hi-Lo) I see they have some teen romance, etc.
HS teacher here: grade level, or at least similar to grade level is fine as long as it’s interesting enough. Unfortunately, she isn’t alone and it’s not uncommon to find HS students reading at a 4th-6th grade level, and if you find a book they like they will still engage with it. On that note, try KL Walter books, Gossip Girl, Twilight, John Green books like The Fault in Our Stars, or Heartstopper. There are also many TV adaptions of popular teen series so you can ask what she likes to watch and see if there is a book for that
Not sure if my opinion will be valid but maybe The Little Prince?!
I remember as a kid, learning quite a few interesting things with it and also there are draws and very cool arts about it. It feels timeless to me. Also it has a lovely movie.
