I’m looking for a good realistic/historical fiction book to help my mom get into reading fiction. She hasn’t read a fiction book in over 30 years. It needs to be fairly easy read with a straightforward plot, but with enough substance that we can have meaningful discussions about it together. Anything fantasy/scifi, or anything with too much sex/violence is a no-go for her. It could contemporary or classic, as long as it isn’t too difficult to read. Thanks!

My mom really likes Kristen Hannah. Would likely fit the bill!
Try The Pigeon Pie Mystery by Julia Stewart. Victorian mystery, but not the least bit gruesome. An Indian princess is put up in a “grace and favor” home in Hampton Court Palace. A lady’s maid is accused of murder. It’s an easy, humorous read, but lots to discuss.

The Book Thief, All the Light We Cannot See and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society are popular WW2 books that all have pretty straightforward plots without sex or overt violence (though war is the backdrop).
The Amelia Peabody Series, Elizabeth Peters . Light mystery archeological novels set in the 1800’s to the discovery of King Tuts Tomb. She is a wonderful character
