as someone who is in the closet and had a black and white, strict morality on the world. when I realised that fact about myself, I had a strong moral dilemma about lying. if lying is wrong then I’m terrible. but I’m lying for my own safety and for my mother‘s happiness, I’m lying because my mom said she’d rather die than have me disappoint her. so. As you can guess, the theme of lying has become very precious to me and this impossible situation has tortured me since like forever. and eventually I went “fuck it” and decided to hold pride, rather than shame in lying.
anyways I don’t care about what the story is about, but a story that explores lying like this, secrets, the crushing weight of them, lies to protect, the suspicion cast on people, the fear of being caught, the unhelpable desires and dreams that one has despite them breaking not only societal norms but core religious values… I need something to project on guys. I want to hear about other people going through things like this. the situation does not need to be the same, at all. but exploring these moral themes and their emotional ramificarions? please do.
(also doesn’t just have to be books, if you think of another medium with such a story please tell me!)

1984 by George Orwell comes to mind. The entire society is built on deception.
Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. There was lying here and there. Very strong in LGBTQ.
I really hate deception and dishonesty. Trump is a big example of why I dislike it. He mixes in both lies and truth. Those who trust easily get misled easily.
I’ve read cases of post-op trans who didn’t tell their sexual partner they were transitioned. Violence occurred in some cases. I think it’s good to tell the truth upfront for a case by case basis. But it’s also smart to hide your identity in dangerous times, whether it be for discrimination, antisemitism.
Currently reading: A People’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn
It’s similar to your theme about deceit. Much of what we’ve learned in school are sometimes lies and propaganda. With this book, we come closer to the truth by knowing all points of views.
