I just listened to an interview with a top scientist and she said that 40 years ago, for someone living in a small town with limited access to media and travel, books were among the very few windows to the outside world . It's a primary way to explore distant places, cultures and ideas. And it was because of books that her life was shaped, they made her fall in love with science and inspired her to pursue a career in it. Before the internet and smartphones, the world was really different. But I’m curious how different was it, really? Were books the only way to explore the world, especially if you were just a kid?
