People request "best nonfiction" books on here almost weekly and I always recommend to folks to read "Barbarian Days" by William Finnegan as it is one of the best books, period, fiction or nonfiction, that I have ever read. Yet,I have not seen much engagement with that recommendation, nor do I ever see any other suggestions for it!

What other books (fiction or nonfiction) do you suggest regularly, but don't see mentioned much elsewhere on this sub?

John Muir: Rediscovering America by Frederick Turner. My favorite biography I’ve read

Nonfiction: Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America by Gilbert King

      Fiction: Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

      Both blew me away

    3. *Battle of the Linguist Mages* by Scotto Moore. It’s just an absurdly fun modern cyberpunk-fantasy with a super cool premise. It’s far from high-brow literature by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s incredibly fun, funny, and the author being a playwright I think does a LOT of justice to his ability to evoke super vivid imagery with his words.

I was hooked pretty much from start to finish. As long as you’re okay with things being just a little silly (the foundation of the book is a VR video game called Sparkle Dungeon) then I think everybody should give it a shot.

    4. Empire Falls – Richard Russo

The Talented Mr Ripley – Patricia Highsmith

      Love both!
