So I just finished the bell jar and I must say it is a wonderful book. Definitely not the best book but a lovely one nonetheless.

The amount of people praising it and saying it's the best piece of literature has me confused though. Why do so many people think this? It's a wonderful book but not the best imo. Is there some lore I'm missing?

    Thanks everyone <3

Because it puts depression into words that no one had ever done before.

People like different things. Some people think carbonara is the best kind of pasta ever invented. It is delicious, but I prefer ravioli.

You have to view it in the time in which it was written. The topic of depression wasn’t discussed like it is in The Bell Jar.

    4. I think a lot of highly praised books fall victim to not being able to live up to the hype.

That being said, I’m sure I’ll get eaten alive for this but, I personally couldn’t stand that book. It felt like a privileged girl who’s never had any real problems complaining about how hard things are for her.

    5. I read The Bell Jar as a 17-18 yr old. Extremely depressed, suicidal and having severe body dysmorphophobia. I remember reading it and I felt like the author has put what I felt into words.

The suffocating pain of depression, the gloomy cloudy outlook towards life, the art of not deriving joy from anything and looking at everything as a malformed object gave voice to what I felt. It was as if I am the author floating through life feeling just extremely sad as if the world is dimmed.

I felt heard and seen. Almost 20 years later, I still carry what that book gave me. I am sure if I read it now, I am going to roll my eyes at the teenage angst . But the teenager me didn’t feel that at all.
