White Oleander by Janet Fitch is about a very complex mother-daughter relationship, alongside a series of contrasting relationships that the daughter has with other mother figures who enter her life at different stages. It’s essentially a coming of age novel in which the daughter has to figure out her own individual identity, both as a result of and in spite of her experiences with her own mother and other adult women in her life.
